Harriet's Beginning of Life
The historical site of Harriet Tubman and her adventures while conducting The Underground Railroad.
Harriet was born in 1819. She was born to two slaves on a plantation. She was born to the proud parents of ben Ross and
Harriet Greene. Other slaves would have to sneek out of thier tents to go see the new born. Harriet named the baby girl Araminta
Ross and when she got older she became know as harriet Ross Tubman. Harriet ( baby ) was not the only child they had, they
had several more children before Harriet ( baby ).
Harriet was born in Dorchester County around the Eastern shore of Maryland. When Harriet ( baby ) was born slavery was
a part of everyday American life for over 200 years. Chesapeake Bay was one of the most common importing and exporting places
of slaves. The slaves were bought and shipped to many other places. Most slaves were captives taken from South America. Many
slaves had died bacuse of little food to none for 4 months. Death and disease were common because of the little to no food
for 4 months.
They were placed in filthy cargo holds for that period of time that they were being shipped. They also were chained together
so they could not move much or even escape.
Harriet's Life On the Plantation
Harriet lived on the plantation owned by the Brodas. Her time there was not hard on her at all. I also was not easy to
be there because if the slave did obey command he or she was whipped. This also happened if they were woking to slowly. harriet's
parents wanted Harriet to be put to work in the house rather than in the dirty old field. Harriet was watched by an elderly
woman who had given her time to the working in the field. Harriet played with other children under the elderly ladies eye
to make sure they didn't try to escape.
Harriet was put to work as soon as she was old and stong enough to handle
the labored work. When harriet was six years old she was sent to another farm to learn how to weave and cook. Harriet did
not like having to learn how to do all of this stuff. Harriet was put indoors to weave the master's linen and clothing, but
she did not like this because she liked the smell of the outdoors. Harriet Disliked trapping animals so much that she
would sometimes let them free when no one was looking. In 1820, which happened to be the year that Harriet was born that the
first anti-slavery paper had came out.
Then the Missouri Comprimise reset the boundries for the slavery in the US. At that point it was
only the south states had slaves and the north states had free slaves( not really slaves ). Most slaves did not hear about
the comprimise so they never got to know about the new boundries and if they were free. Then one day a carpender named Vesey
had bought his freedom when he was 33 years old. The southern plantation owners had thought that the other slaves might do
the same thing as Vesey. Then one day all of slaves freedom had be taken out from under them. After that the slaves had to
have a pass from thier plantation owner. Also slaves were now not allowed to even communicate to each other. For a few months
harriet was mistreated by being whipped for letting the baby cry and wake up the mother. She had to be nursed back to health
by her mother and soon after she was back to health she was then put to hard work. This plantation owner made Harriet carry
heavy barrels and work all day long in the feild. Harriet was hit in the head with a two-pound weight in the fore-head and
got a large dent. Harriet had never gotten over the whole head fracture so she would suddenly fall asleep and nothing would
wake her up.
The owner of Harriet tried everything to sell her to another person but they had one good look and rejected her because
they didn't want an injured slave and that the fact was she might die soon. Harriet had thought differently after recovering
from the injury and hoped that she might find a way to be free. A slave named David had escaped from his master's watchful
eye while he was coming or watching after his property. Then as David reached the other shore he had disappered. his master
had searched and searched and never found David. The path that David had taken became known as what we call it today " The
Underground Railroad." Many people who beleaved that slaves should be free helped free the slaves. Harriet Tubman was one
of the Underground Railroad conductors. Harriet Tubman slept during the day and walked during the night. She went from safe
house to safe house trying not to get cought. When Harriet had reached the boder she was happy but still sad because there
was no one there to greet her to freedom. Though she new her parents were free, she had no idea where they were. Harriet had
continued to go down to help other slaves be free. She was one of the most famous wanted runaway slaves. Harriet helped many
other slaves reach freedom. She had even helped her brother and his wife whom she never meet. Harriet then had to stop helping
slaves to freedom after the civil war had ended.
